Starting yoga at home: what you actually need
A mat with enough grip, a bottle of water and twenty minutes. Everything else is optional.
Yoga has one of the lowest barriers to entry of any exercise. Here is the honest list of what helps and what you can skip.
The mat
Thickness is a trade-off: 6 mm cushions knees and wrists for beginners; thinner mats give better balance in standing poses. Grip matters more than thickness — a mat that slides on tile will end a session early.
Water
A vacuum flask keeps water cold through a session on a hot afternoon and means one less trip to the kitchen mid-flow.
What you can skip
- Blocks and straps — a folded towel and a belt do the same job for months.
- Special clothing — anything stretchy you already own.
- Long sessions — twenty minutes daily beats ninety minutes weekly.
